Claim the Unclaimed

A few years ago a professor I had showed us a website where we could look at public records in the state of Utah. I have no idea what the point of the lesson was. I think it was something to do with how we should  petition UVU to lower the President’s salary, as we could now see how little much he makes. I think my professor someone was a little bitter.

A few weeks ago I decided to check it out again. I couldn’t remember the exact site, but after a little googling, I found it. Because I tend to appreciate the morbid things in life, I spent a few hours looking at the sex offender list and finding people I knew who had been divorced. Yep, you can see it all there.

As I was looking around I saw a link for unclaimed property. I searched my name in their data base and it turns out I had 3 unclaimed property notifications. So to get your property, you have to fill out a form they provide, get it notarized, and send in a copy of your driver’s license and social security card to prove your identity.

That part made me nervous. How do I know this isn’t some scam and all of a sudden my credit report is going to show that I bought 6 cars in China and some real estate in Maui?

So, I looked up the mailing address on the site and it was in fact the treasurer’s office. I was still a little nervous, but decided to go for it.

Monday night (3-4 weeks later) I check the mail and there just happens to be a letter from the treasurer’s office with a check inside. Before I tell you how much, I assumed at best I would get like 30 bucks from some utility bill deposit I never got back. OK, so take a guess….and scroll down.

Yep! 500 bucks!!

Can you believe it? I can’t recall what each claim could be from, but I can tell you this much- I am NOT complaining.

If you’re a Utah resident, go here and check it out. Nothing to lose, and something to gain :)

And that is the first time I claimed my unclaimed property!
